Winding its way from Lake Koycegiz to the Agean, the River Dalyan is home to both freshwater and loggerhead turtles. And with a little help from our in-the-know local guides, you might get to see both species on this morning tour. Gökhan, one of our guides, says of the valley, "God has made this place so beautiful, with hot springs and Turkey's most beautiful beach. And there's a varied ecosystem, with migrating birds and turtles."
Leaving early in the morning, your electric-powered and animal-friendly eco boat will glide along the Dalyan, floating by reed beds towards Iztuzu Beach on the coast. Keep your eyes peeled for the freshwater turtles along the way. Your skipper will slow down as we pass the ancient Lycian tombs, carved to look like temples into cliff faces thousands of years ago. It almost feels like you've landed in an Indiana Jones movie.
Next, hop on a coach and head for Iztuzu Beach, where you might glimpse some of the loggerheads that nest on its protected sands. During your vist, your guide will clue you in to the lives of these creatures, covering everything from their lifespan to what happens during hatching season – which lasts from April to June here. You'll also learn about the relationship between the turtles and the locals here, who go to great lengths to help the animals. You'll then have some free time on the beach – a long strand of blond sand lapped by the Aegean on one side and backed by a lovely lagoon.
