The Temple of Poseidon is a place of beauty, mystery and wonder. Perched on a rocky spur on the coast of Cape Sounion, it’s considered one of the best-preserved ancient temples in all of Greece, and amongst the most important monuments from the Golden Age of Athens.
Built in 444 BC using marble from the nearby valley of Agrilesa, the architectural masterpiece is dedicated to the Greek god of Poseidon and resembles the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus. Originally, it consisted of 34 Doric-style columns adorned with intricate carvings, but only 16 of these remain standing. As you explore the site, admire the craftsmanship and details of the remarkable structure while soaking up a sense of history and wonder.
Around an hour’s drive from Athens, the Temple of Poseidon makes for a perfect day trip from the Greek capital. Whether you’re a history buff or simply wanting to marvel at impressive architecture with sweeping views of the Aegean Sea, this place is worth a visit.

“The ladies that were the guides in the morning and afternoon were excellent”
“Not long enough at the site. Long journey to make for such a short visit. Information from guide was not engaging enough. Lacking passion about the subject. This is how it came across to our party.”
“This was broken up into 2 separate tours am and pm. The guide for the morning dropped us off at the restaurant for lunch and left us. We were informed that we had to make our own way back to the tour office for the pm trip pick up. The tour guide for the afternoon was awful and lacked any communication skills and it was an 90minute trip for a 10 minute tour by ourselves, guide didn't come with us. Very disappointed”
“Excellent value and great way to get to know Athens. Good to get to the Acropolis early before the crowds. Our guide really brought it all alive. Museum also ver interesting with our guide's help. Lunch was very good, 3 courses and we just paid for drinks. Trip to Cape Sounion also well worthwhile.”
