Diep verborgen in de jungle van Yucatan ligt de oude Mayastad Cobá. Op deze culturele trip bezoek je de ruïnes en ontdek je het raadselachtige Maya erfgoed. Ook zie je een grote piramide, ontmoet je lokale dorpsbewoners en zwem je in een heilige cenote. Valentina, een van onze deskundige lokale gidsen, vertelt: "Cobá was ooit een enorme stad, waar op het hoogtepunt ongeveer 50.000 mensen woonden. Coba betekent "woelige wateren" omdat de stad bij twee lagunes met veel wind lag. Het is minder bekend dan Chichen Itza, dus het is er meestal rustiger en intiemer.”

We komen vroeg aan in Cobá zodat je de site in de koelere uren meteen goed verkent en de drukte ontloopt. Cobá is een van de recentere opgravingen op het schiereiland Yucatan en was ooit een van de belangrijkste steden van de Maya's. De highlights die je niet mag missen, zijn de meer dan 40 meter hoge Grote Piramide en de Maya-steles - pilaren of tabletten met een reliëf - die de machtige vrouwelijke leiders van het oude Cobá voorstellen. Valentina: "De hoofdpiramide van Cobá is de grootste in de regio. Het is het middelpunt van de oude verharde "witte wegen" die dwars door de site lopen. Er zijn meer dan 50 van deze wegen in en rond Cobá en ze werden in het verleden gebruikt voor handel en communicatie.”

Dan bezoek je een Maya-gemeenschap, waar de dorpelingen nog steeds zonder stromend water of elektriciteit leven. Je ontmoet een paar lokale bewoners en komt meer te weten over hun manier van leven en hun tradities. Ook woon je een Maya-ceremonie bij voordat je in een nabijgelegen restaurant smult van een traditionele lunch. En je sluit deze bijzondere dag af met een verfrissende duik in een cenote in de buurt.
