Met een bezoek aan de werkplaats van een maskervakman in Mamoiada, in het hart van Sardinië, kun je het verhaal horen van de maskers van Mamuthones en Issohadores, verteld door degenen die elke dag een stuk hout transformeren in wat het symbool is geworden van carnaval op Sardinië. Bij Mamoiada worden de maskers nog steeds gemaakt zoals ze waren: licht, draagbaar, zwart geverfd, met fronsende wenkbrauwen en de mond samengetrokken in een grimas van pijn. De gids en vakman laat je zijn suggestieve atelier zien, waar je de verschillende stadia van de verwerking volgt, van de stam tot het masker. Je ziet de geboorte van unieke stukken, met de hand gemaakt, in verschillende soorten Sardijns hout, van perastro tot steeneik.
